I can’t tell how many times I have re-watched the new Sunrise on the reaping trailer and obsessing over the first look. If you follow my socials you can tell by how many edits I have made so far. If I thought the book was enough the trailer has blown my mind and I don’t even want to say anything about the movie as we still have a year left for that. But, for now we have the Sunrise on the he reaping first looks and a trailer to breakdown while waiting for the movie.

But first, what is Sunrise on the Reaping Movie About :

Sunrise on the Reaping is an upcoming hunger games movie. Based on Suzanne Collins’ 0.5 book in the hunger games series it’s a science fiction dystopian movie set in the same universe as all the hunger games movies. On March 18, 2025 the book was released and the movie adaptation was announced to be released on November 20, 2026.

Following the main plot of the book and exploring young Haymichs story the movie will center around the 50th Hunger Games, also referred to as the Second Quarter Quell. The movie is produced by Lionsgate. Francis Lawrence will be back as the director who handled several Hunger Games films previously.

The movie is being adapted from the book “Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins” so it will be focusing on the story of this book. It is the 0.5 book in Suzanne Collins Hunger Games series and the sequel of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Set in the same hunger games world, 24 years before the first hunger games book It’s about Haymitch Abernathy.

During the Second Quarter Quell of the 50th Hunger Games Haymitch Abernathy from District 12 reaches twenty as he faces the inhumane system that aims to destroy him in the brutal games. The bitter alteration of the Quarter Quell tribute rules destroys all of Haymitch’s dreams as it forcibly tears him from his nearest and dearest people including his beloved girl, Leonore Dove.

As a District 12 tribute his alliance with other Capitol victims becomes clear because the Capitol schemed his demise from the beginning. The movie will also focus on the political corruption of the early panem followed by President Snow’s orders, Haymitch story of survival, the chaos and cruelty of Quarter Quell.

The hunger games is a book to movie series adaptation of the bestselling author Suzzane Collins. It’s a 4 book series with 5 movies. (Check the Books + Movie Order, here). It’s about a post-apocalyptic dystopian world called Panem, which is divided into 12 districts and ruled by a dictatorial Capitol. Every year a boy and a girl (between the ages of 12 and 18) from each district are chosen and forced to participate in the live televised event called The Hunger Games.

Where the participants also known as tributes have to fight to death in a vast arena created by the Capitol Game makers till one of them survives and the winner gets to return home as a victor and lots of luxury.

Sunrise on the Reaping Movie Trailer Breakdown : 

Just like the previous Hunger games movies, the sunrise on the reaping movie trailer hits with a gritty and atmospheric tone that feels like the big hunger games movies. More specifically it felt like catching fire and songbird and snakes had a baby sunrise and the reaping would be that. Now, let’s dive into the trailer.

• The reaping scene – It felt like a heartfelt welcome to the chaos and cruelty the movie has stored for us. In the book, the story begins with Haymitch’s birthday and the reaping happens on the same day. So, the movie might begin at the same time around. 
• First glimpse of the arena and its giving Midsummer? – If you have watched Ari Aster psychological horror Midsommer this scene definitely reminded you of that The wide shot, spring setting, the floral meadow, colors and aesthetic, the sunlit horror vibe everything was Midsommer coded. 
• Haymitch’s closeup – We got a clearer look of our young Haymitch Abernathy. Young, angry, clever and calculating just like the older Haymitch we have seen in the previous hunger games movies.
• Haymitch and Lenore dove
• The sunrise and the repping cast and characters
• President snow is back so is the hating chain
• The Fire Scene

Sunrise on the Reaping Movie Theories and Predictions :

• The arena will be more brutal than the book with expanded traps, new environmental dangers and painful psychological tortures.
• The Capitol will be more politically active as we will see the beginning of President Snow’s corruption era, quarter quell forming a plan and more propaganda. 
• More district 12 lore, more information on Haymitch’s family and roots, backstory with more depth than the book.
• Connections and parallels of the previous books and movies. We have gotten some crumbs of parallels. So we can expect more when the movie comes out. 
• Some og characters cameos and hint of the next hunger games movies. Jennifer lawrence and peeta are confirmed to be a part of the new Sunrise and Te reaping movie so we can definitely expect their cameos with some surprise. 

My thoughts and expectations on the Sunrise on the Reaping Movie :

Every single frame on the trailer was pure perfection just like the book as it did an absolutely amazing job portraying the story’s intention, emotions, pain, worldbuilding and artistry. I was literally on the edge of my seat with excitement on finally seeing one of my favorite books coming live. My beloved characters are played by one of the best actors ever. I am so seated and I know how November 2026 is going to feel.
