About Funny Story by Emily Henry + Summary

Funny Story by Emily Henry

Funny Story follows Daphne and Miles who are the ex’s of their ex’s. I know it sounds very messy. So, Daphne is all set with the wedding plans with Peter, the love of her life for the last 4 years but after his bachelor party, he breaks off the wedding because according to him he’s in love with his childhood best friend Petra and can not marry anyone else.

And right after announcing it tells Daphne to move out of his place and runs away with Petra for a getaway. Before she could process everything, she finds Miles at the door with a similar situation. Heartbroken and frustrated. Daphne, thinking of a quick option to solve her living situation, asks Miles if she could move into his apartment. And he agrees right away.

As they start living together, they heal and try to co exist but amidst everything they find themselves becoming friends to eventually more by finding a peaceful space in each other.

Funny Story by Emily Henry My Thoughts + Favorite Quotes (Spoiler Free)

My year in books will never be completed if I don’t read a brand new Emily Henry book. Ever since I started reading romance books, especially Emily Henry books, I can’t think of summer without an Emily Henry book in mind. For me her books feel like summer and movies in the form of a book.

I’ve read Emily Henry’s every new release in the same month whenever they were out and slowly made it a tradition. This year it took a while as I’m having the worst year in reading possible. But I’m glad I finally picked it up. My reading experience is more exciting knowing a funny story is also getting a book to screen adaptation like all the other Emily Henry books.

“Our gazes latch.
The fluttery warmth in my stomach curdles.”

– One thing that I found really unique is how both the main characters went through a heartbreak. And Emily did a fantastic job writing that part too. Like I could actually feel how Daphne and Miles felt throughout their heartbreak.
The book was a perfect mix of everything. Something I’ve not read in Emily Henry’s.

Just two people who just got heartbroken and got thrust into a life none of them ever thought they would be in. But slowly co existing to heal together going on mini adventures, doing domestic things without acknowledging, making each other laugh, cooking and watching action movies none of their previous partners liked to actually falling in love.

“I think you should do exactly what you want to do,” I tell her.
“Let’s rob a bank,” she says.
“I think you should get a dog.”

– I love Daphne and Ashleighs friendship. They both were in a stage where everything was confusing. Daphne not only had a terrible breakup but also a friendship breakup as all her friends were her ex’s friends too. Even though they would try to console her and constantly tell her they are with her but never meant it truly ae they would hang out with Peter and Petra. It hurt Daphne. And after moving to my apartment everything drastic changes.

“If I had to be marooned, I’m glad it was with you.”

– I don’t remember exactly but Emily Henry posted a story on Instagram where she posted a screenshot of her note app or a journal where it was a list of books by her and there was a song from the midnight album. Each of her books got a midnight song and this book was untitled back then but Maroon was beside it.

And based on the lyrics I thought it’s going to be sadder than all her books. It was in some ways but I’ve never thought she would reference it like this. Also I did predict this book will have the roommates to lovers tropes because of the song. But now I can’t stop thinking about Daphne and Miles whenever these songs start playing.

“I know I’m not who you pictured yourself with, but I think I could be, eventually. If you’ll let me. So don’t go. Because I don’t want you to. Because you’re my best friend, and I’m in love with you.”

– I am going to re-read this book solely because I want to make a list of Taylor Swift songs or words she uses the most on her lyrics that are used in this book. Spoiler – there are a million. This book is maroon coded which means it actually feels like Maroon by Taylor Swift but there are also sprinkles of Taylors popular songs too. So when I make the list I’ll add it here too.

“Life’s short enough without us talking ourselves out of hope and trying to dodge every bad feeling. Sometimes you have to push through the discomfort, instead of running.”
I am at a loss of words to describe how much I love Emily Henry’s writing style but this write here proves I don’t need anymore words to describe. It is just to perfect. Whenever I start a new book by her I just hope it takes longer and the pages never end.

“Drink. Dance. Have fun.”
“In a room with our exes,” I point out. “Who thinks we’re dating.”
Miles’s smile hitches up. “See?” he says. “Doesn’t that sound fun?”

– When the tropes were revealed I thought this book would be a lot similar to Happy Place. For some reason I thought ex’s fake dating or ex’s have to be roommates for some reason just like Harriet and Wyn in Happy Place. Then it took me to read the blurb to realize basically ex’s of current ex’s are going to fake dates and share an apartment.

Like how does an idea like this come up in a normal human mind? Well apparently, it does in Emily Henry’s. And I am so excited to read her next few books to know what she came up with.

A Little Spoilery Rant Review(skip if you don’t want any spoilers) :

Okay so basically this is the part where I dump all my thoughts or rants of the book. Soo, I didn’t like Miles at first, for some reason I thought he was kinda rude to Daphne but I forgive him for all the things he did for her. Then, Daphne as much as I liked her I think she was really very stupid. I think everyone except Miles treated her very badly at some points of her life.

Starting with her dad, her ex fiance, her friends, colleagues and even miles at first. But she was too sweet to ignore all that. If I was in her place I would have cut them off or gone on a revenge spree. I would flood Peter’s house with glitter and trash. Like both Peter and Petra are so terrible. I am happy they got their Karma.

More importantly I would have never rekindled with her best friend who took Peter’s side when he called off the wedding and broke Daphne’s heart. But it’s part of classic Emily Henry writing which is very raw and realistic so no complaints there.
