The Met Gala 2026 just happened and it proved again how the themes keep getting better each year. Especially with literature, art, time, creativity combining with fashion. And, this year’s Met Gala 2026 served with the costume art theme. The dress code was “Fashion is Art” which felt like it was specifically for the people who think about books and aesthetics at the same time.
Which I do btw. Everytime I read a book I would make a Pinterest board while reading the book with the title of the book and aesthetic. You can find them here or in my book reviews too as I make edits and add them in my reviews.
So, I finally attended the Met gala from my room aka went through all the looks and watched the interviews on youtube and thought of making this post! Which I actually thought of making back in 2024 but decided to make a different one as it was related to the book. You can check it here. But, I am finally making it after two years with some of my favourite Met Gala 2026 Outfits as books. Where I pair each outfit and look with a book.
So, let’s get into it and you might get some good book recs too!
Emma Chamberlain – Dolly Alderton Books

I have to start with my favourite. I can’t wait till the end. Miss Emma Frances Chamberlain served. Like I can’t stop looking at her outfit and actually thinking of printing it out. Emma and her team totally understood the assignment because she looked like an art. It is honestly very Emma coded too. As she paints and thrives on art. Also this iconic outfit was a bespoke Mugler gown hand painted by Miguel Castro Freitas, a tribute to her father, a renowned oil painter, who used Van Gogh and Edvard Munch’s paintings for inspiration. Painted entirely with traditional fine art materials and took 40 hours to paint and 4 days to dry.
And the rest was all miss Emma Chamberlain and her colorful personality speaking loud.
So, I paired her outfit with dolly Alderton books. I couldn’t pick only one book. So, I added all her books as the genres and themes are similar and goes with her personality and the themes of the Met gala 2026.
Emma Chamberlain called the gown “a creepy, ominous undertone — like the way it moves” and added that it has a “watercolor feel. That’s all I know about Love in two sentences. Dolly Alderton’s writing about friendship and growing up and love and heartbreak is warm and funny on the surface, and quietly devastating when you turn a page, when you’re not ready. So I just feel it’s the most right fitting to pair up.
Hailey Bieber – The Wedding People Alison Espach
When I saw Hailey’s outfit it directly reminded me of the book cover of wedding people. The Wedding People is set around a woman who arrives at a hotel set out to make some serious decisions that ends up being hijacked by a stranger’s wedding celebration. There’s grief and there’s a bachelorette party, and they’re just as beautiful and unexpected together as they can be in the same story. The two colors are not in conflict with each other. They’re negotiating. Like all the other characters in Alison Espach’s wedding people they should not be getting involved in one another, and are only exactly what the other needs. A look that conveys that matches haileys met gala 2026 outfit just like the cover of the book.
The blue color paired with the sparkly golden color couldn’t be more perfect to go with the book and it also kinda felt like a perfect wedding outfit. And, surprisingly it kinda matched the theme of the book. It was harmonious, unexpected, and all the better for it.
Nicole Kidman – Good Girl Bad Blood by Holly Jackson and The Housemaid Series by Frieda Mcfadden
I am currently reading the housemaids secret as its in production and slowly all the cast members are being revealed. And, also planned to do a re-read of the good girls guide to murder as the series is scheduled to release in June. So, when I saw Nicole’s Met gala 2026 outfit it just felt like these books belonged to her or her outfit was inspired by the book covers.
As co-chair of the night, Nicole Kidman wore a sequined red Chanel gown with a drop waist. It’s at the same time the most opulent item on the carpet and the most cool. Just like pip from good girl bad blood.
With everyone having underestimated her one last time, Pip Fitz-Amobi is Nicole Kidman in Chanel as Good Girl, Bad Blood. The surface is the sequins – shiny, glittery, all good. Below him there’s someone watching, listening, taking notes and ready to give you the uncomfortable truth.
And the outfit matching the cover of the book is cherry on top.
Same with the housemaid secrets. The sequins will reflect all the lights in all the rooms. And, the outfit screams the sequel of the housemaid secrets.
Sarah Pidgeon – Bright young women by Jessica Knoll
Now we have our Carolyn Bessette aka Sarah Pidgeon. Looking like a belle from new York. For her first met Sarah went with a custom look by Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez was created for Sarah Pidgeon, one of whom has taken the Fashion Is Art dress code to heart with a sculptural, architectural approach: The top was a twisted bandeau in chartreuse matte satin, the skirt was a column. Sarah shared that ” its whimsical but very powerful at the same time, and very architectural. I feel like I’m not only standing in all the statuesque ways, but that I’m the medium in which this piece of art is walking up the Met steps,”. A very CBK way to put this. But it also reminded me of this book.
Bright Young Women by Jessica Knoll is a book about the women who survived one of America’s most infamous serial killers.
Told with their humanity, their brightness, their refusal to be a victim. Lively, imposing, formal, conspicuous. A woman that will not be an afterthought. Sarah Pidgeon walking up those steps, in a colour that represents the themes of the book and also as a canvas for art summarizing Jessica Knolls book.
Isha Ambani – King of Gluttony by Ana Huang
If Maya Singh attended the met gala she would without any doubt wear this exact outfit. A customized Gaurav Gupta sari woven with pure golden threads paired up with swadesh craft with pichai motifs and 250 carats of diamond jewelry straight from mom, nita ambanis private collection.
And a mango hanging from her hand which she also wore as an accessory. The whole look pretty much sums up the south asian beauty and art as it uses historical references from ancient indian frescoes. The golden look from the outfit and the foundation orange look from the look totally goes with Ana Huangs first south asian representation book, king of gluttony. So this seemed like a strong pair.
KUN – The Mindfuck series by S.T Abby
Another red outfit and it kinda saved me from not pairing up with Nicole’s kidman’s outfit. Cai Xukun wore a black and red sharp jacket and trouser combo inspired by his song “deadman” and also quoting “I am like bleeding right here gesturing to his jacket. An outfit Lana myer would love to wear during her quests. Well not really because that would be kinda hectic for her to proceed with her plans. But, she would definitely love it. Just how much I love the Mindfuck series. Which is infinitely. And, when I saw Kun’s outfit it quickly reminded me of the cover of the mindfuck series and what Kun said to describe his outfit confirmed it more and I couldn’t think of any other book than this.
Which also made me think Lana and Kun could be friends and his songs could feature in the upcoming Minfuck series tv adaptation.
Sombr – The Secret History by Donna Tart
Sombr met outfit screamed dark academia to me. If someone could make an art inspired by this trope this outfit would be the best way to put it.
The promising pop star took a pair of black lace and velvet with a steely silver cape, designed by Alessandro Michele for Valentino calling a “very knights-of-the-roundtable — and very Sombr” for his Met Gala debut.
There was only the Secret History by Donna Tartt that I could think of. Black lace, black velvet, silver metal, and a silhouette reminiscent of medieval knights, all are Richard Papen and he finds himself in a world where the rules are all different, and all more dangerous, and all more beautiful, than hes known. The Valentino by Alessandro Michele style is always literary, always a little gothic, and always beautiful in its intellectuality. The Ancient Greek translation is black lace. At the end of The Secret History is a snow, a silver cape, cold and still and covering everything that has happened. Somber’s first Met Gala looks like he’s always lived in this world. At least that’s what I’d like to believe.
Anna Hathaway – Verity and devils wear prada
The Book: Verity by Colleen Hoover AND The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger
Inspired by a poem Anna Hathaway wore an elaborate black and white gown created by Michael Kors, and a sparkling Bulgari necklace (which is inspired from ancient Greek pottery and hand painted by artist Peter McGough). The black and white duality felt Verity’s manuscript, two versions of the same story, which cannot both be true. Which is an upcoming thriller book to movie Anna starred in as the main character Verity Crawford. The idea of the hand-painted ancient Greek pottery is inspired by the archaeological dig of Lowen through Verity’s belongings, finding beauty and something very sinister. The Bulgari collar is the secret around Verity’s neck which is a decoration and also a prison at the same time.
Also there could be The Devil Wears Prada too. She is just Anne Hathaway, wearing an iconic black and white gown, to the Met Gala or maybe that’s Andy Sachs, who has finally figured out the game, to an event at Runway. The collar alone has Miranda Priestly. Either way if you think deeply we can say thé represents both her movies that are based on books while serving the best look as always.
Sabrina Carpenter – Better Than The Movies and Silver Wings Golden games
In a custom dior gown created by Jonathan Anderson themed after the film “Sabrina” featuring film strips. So, even if the cover of Better than the movies doesn’t go with the outfit the title definitely does. But to also match with her outfit I have added Silver and Gold games!
In Better Than the Movies Liz Bennet has had a life-long idea of how love should go, she has a list, she’s got expectations and she’s got a whole film-coded idea of how love should go. Then life arrives in scuffed sneakers and is very inconvenient. In Liz’s mind, all those movies, all those expectations, all that wonderful idea of how the story should go is sew-ed into a beautiful dress that she has to wear into the real world. Just like Sabrina’s outfit for the Met Gala 2026.
Sabrina Carpenter is always in the best light and Silver and Golden Games The glittering, cinematic, golden-hour energy of the whole is a testament to that. If you’ve ever felt like you were watching something beautiful happen, this book is that kind of aspirational, glittering, perfectly-lit romance.
Anok Yai – Gild by Raven Kennedy and Twisted Lies by Ana Hiuang
Anok Yai, the woman you are. She herself is an art. She didn’t even need any outfit to match the theme of this year’s Met gala 2026 theme. She became a living bronze masterpiece, a Renaissance sculpture, a mythical deity. Black ruched silk organza was precisely and fluidly wrapped around the body in the dramatic ensemble. This was enhanced by an oversized hood which framed her face as a sacred icon, and a whole body in shimmering bronze.
Just like Gild by Raven Kennedy. This woman became someone that’s gilded, someone that’s divine, someone that the world sees and deems an object of beauty, but the person on the inside is infinitely more complex. The tension of Anok Yai becoming a living gold statue on the steps of the Met is that she’s the gold-touched royal favourite and desired for what she is, not who she is.
Which also reminded me of Ana Huang’s character Ayana Kidane. Dark brown skin, long legs, high cheekbones, and dark eyes. She is described as ethereal. Just kike Anok Kai. And, I have a feeling her character was inspired by her. She is also a famous model so if she attended the meet, without any doubt it would be this.
Ben Platt – Bridgerton
Ben Platt wore a custom Tanner Fletcher suit that was adorned with scenes from Georges Seurat, its pointillist piece “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte “a quintessential painting of the modern era and its two faces of social display and loneliness.
Which somehow matches the themes of Bridgerton and also could be described a
Bridgerton. Obviously. In an 1884 painting of the English leisure class at their most socially performative. In the Bridgerton universe of Julia Quinn, the ton is precisely this painting: people on display, people performing, people acutely aware of being displayed and watched, the show and the isolation unfolding in each of the drawing rooms, each of the balls. Show up at the Met Gala, in Ben Platt’s Seurat and you’ve made the most Bridgertonian move. The painting is a work on the theme of the season. The suit is the marriage mart. Everyone is Lady Whistledown!
Karan Johar – The phoenix king and For Whom the Belle Tolls
And, last but not the least, two books for the man who made Bollywood’s most deliberate statement of the night.
Karan Johar’s first time at the Met Gala is a drama inspired by Manish Malhotra’s work, based on Indian classical paintings, namely Raja Ravi Varma, which was set on a traditional Jaipur Phulghar coat with aari and zardozi work that took over 600 craft hours. This outfit actually reminded me of an Indian movie called “Jodha Akbar” , a romance movie based on the 16th-century political marriage between the Mughal Emperor Akbar and the Rajput Princess Jodhaa Bai. So, I decided to pair it up with. The Phoenix King: A tale of empire, legacy, myth and the burden of an ancient world crashing into the modern.
As For Whom the Belle Tolls ( Hell’s Belles): The drama. The velvet cloak. The total commitment that is theater. Hell’s Belles is like someone who walks into a room knowing that everyone is watching him and who’s ready for it. Karan Johar has never ever walked into a room without being ready for it. This is the entrance, the cape. The myth is the tale. So, the outfit and the book match perfectly.
And that’s all for my Met Gala Outfits as book recs! I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did making it. The best part about the Met gala is always the most unique and beautiful themes. And, the fashion in art – Costume Art theme served.
As someone who loves reading and books in general I believe reading is an art and the beautiful covers doing its work as an art and being the costume of the book is the best way to summarize the theme too. Which is why I love making this content.
So, I hope you liked my picks for Met Gala 2026 outfits as books and got your next read. I hope to make another one next year. Till then keep reading and pairing with more met gala outfits!
