A few weeks ago I saw a trailer of Lana Condor and Gavin Casalegno’s new movie The Devil’s Mouth on Prime Video. And immediately wondered what in the Jenny Han universe is going on!? Is this movie somehow connected to her? 

I also remembered after the press tour of The Summer I Turned Pretty Gavin was on some island filming his new movie but didn’t know it was with Lana of all people!? So long story short, there just couldn’t be another way to react to discovering that Lara Jean and Jeremiah Fisher are in the same movie one that’s not about beach houses or summer love triangles or Jenny Han, anyway.

But more on this in a minute. So of course, the question I’ve asked in the title because everyone who’s seen this movie has asked it, is this my first answer because as soon as I watched the The Devil’s Mouth movie I did my fair share of researching and I not only found the answers but some amazing facts too. So, here is everything you need to know with my movie review!

But first, is the Devil’s Mouth Movie a part of the Jenny Han universe?

No, unfortunately not. Zero connection whatsoever. But it would have been so cool to see a transition from sweet cozy summer romance to a dark thriller on an island. 

So, the devils mouth is  a brand new survival horror. Something very different for Jenny Han’s To All the Boys, The Summer I Turned Pretty or XO Kitty fans. It’s about 5 friends from college who head to Thailand, dive down into a cave system and get stuck with a bull shark who doesn’t have any good intentions. It’s not written by Jenny Han. It doesn’t include any of Jenny Han’s characters. But the only thing that is common are the two cast members from Jenny Hans universe are friends in this movie – Lana Condor and Gavin Casalegno. That’s it. That’s all. 

But how did Lana Condor and Gavin Casalegno end up together in The Devil’s Mouth Movie?

Produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Lionsgate, and directed by Jeff Wadlow , The Devil’s mouth was first announced in May 2023. Kathryn Newton and Lana Condor were cast as the leads in May 2025, followed by Gavin Casalegno, Nico Hiraga, Tommi Rose and Tayme Thapthimthong joining the cast in August 2025.

So we can say it was a nice coincidence that these two actors were at the same fandom reunion for Jenny Han and that their other projects were in the same universe.

Okay real talk. I came in assuming I’d get to see these two together on the big screen, even if the film wasn’t that great. I was really amazed at how good it was!

The first act is actually quite funny and cosy. The film takes the fun and energy out of a grand scene and drops the audience straight into a battle for survival and it does a great job on that transition. Before all the trouble breaks loose, you genuinely feel compassion for these people, a feat that most survival thrillers don’t get. Beautiful Thailand setting. The claustrophobia of the cave sequences works very well, a sense of it getting inside your head much like good horror does. But Kathryn Newton’s superb performance from start to finish carries the movie on her shoulders in the second half, and I’d like to watch everything she’s ever done.

Lana and Gavin are both excellent, warm and specific in a way that feels authentic to the performance they bring. They were definitely a breath of fresh air to see them in something other than Jenny Han.

Some of the character choices in the midsection are maddening like the sort of thing you hear in a horror film, “WHY did you do that?” You know the type. But there are a couple of places where you can see the end of the show from a good distance away like the set-up is a bit predictable while the execution is solid.

But, there’s one thing, it’s still watchable, even when it’s being more of an annoyance and predictable. Even when the plot was blatantly telling me where it was heading, the friendship aspects of the characters kept me engaged.

Overall: well done and above average for a 3.5 star. Not perfect. A fantastic film that especially deserves your Friday night because of any your attachment to the cast
