About We Were Liars and Books and The TV Series :
We Were Liars is a young adult psychological thriller that follows Cadence Sinclair and her wealthy family living on a private island every summer. The series has a total of 3 books set in 3 different timelines. The first two are out and the third one will be out in November 2025. Here is the reading order :

We Were Liars Series by E. Lockhart
The first book starts with Cadence as she is trying to figure out what happened last year, because after a very traumatic brain injury she has lost all her memories and everything feels out of place. As she starts her healing journey she discovers everything is so different and starts to investigate what actually happened last summer.
While she tries to gain her memories back, we get to relieve Cadence’s life, cousins and family and how summer on Beechwood island was. Season 1 of We were liars is based on this book. It has a total of 8 episodes. And it is currently available on amazon prime to stream.
Family of Liars (2022)
This book is set one generation back and looks into the lives of the Sinclair mothers when they were just teenagers. It is grim, saturated, and is rife with secrets that are buried waiting to give way to what follows. Memorize: generational trauma, ghosts (literally and figuratively) and emotional damage.
We Fell Apart (2025)
Set five days after the Sinclair house fire from book 1, this novel follows 18 year old Matilda Avalon Klein, who is invited to live with a famous artist Kingsley Cello who claims to be her father and invites her to live at his home on the coast.Somewhere closer to the Sinclairs Beechwood Island.
However, by the time she gets there, her father has disappeared and she has to stay with a weird crowd of teenagers, a frigid housekeeper and a ton of secrets. In finding out more than she wants to know about her father and past, Matilda comes across dark secrets but they are darker in an expected way. This book is not out yet but it will be out this year in November 2025.
Are the Books Being Adapted to Screen?
Yes! The first book has already been adapted to a series of 8 episodes. Which is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime.
There is no official news on season 2 but the final episode of We Were Liars hinted that we might get a season 2. Also a little spoiler: the scene that hinted for a possible season 2 is actually the first book scene of family of liars.
What to expect from Season 2 of We Were Liars : Family of Liars?
If Amazon gives the green light we are definitely getting season 2. We Were Liars is its own story, the logical next move is an adaptation of Family of Liars, which is the prequel. Here are some of my predictions :
- The younger versions of parents of the liars especially Caroline and her sisters when they were teenagers.
- What happened to rosemary sinclair.
- The continued background of the family’s unhealthy nature and demands.
- The historic tragedy that influenced the Sinclair family way before Cadence was born and maybe some more Sinclair family secrets.
- Carrie Sinclair, the mother of Cadence narrates the story of her lost sister.
- More sinister than the Season 1 with additional interest in psychological and supernatural aspects
- A gradual development of how Sinclair family were what they are in We Were Liars
