Regretting you book is about Morgan Grant and her family. Her husband Chris, sister Jenny and and her boyfriend Jonah (which is also Chris;s best friend)..But the book focuses on Clara and her 16 year old daughter Clara Grant who are polar opposites.Yes, you are definitely  not going to find Lorelai and Rory there. 

Morgan is always cautious and tries to control everything which is shaped by her past experience, especially becoming a mother and wife at a young age and not pursuing her dreams. Clara is way opposite of Morgan in every way from becoming independent and enjoying life, but one thing they have in common is none of them wants Clara to repeat Morgan’s mistake.

Their strained mother daughter relationship is held together by Chris. But, he is caught up in a tragic and mysterious car accident and loses his life. Which leaves Morgan and Clara in heartbreak and confusion. As they are dealing with grief and slowly getting back to life some secrets begin to surface. 

And slowly under the most uncomfortable circumstances both mother and daughter work their way through life, trying to fix their strained relation all while falling for the unexpected ones, Morgan, from someone from her past and Clara with the boy she has been told to stay away from. 

The tension grows, so as the problems and misunderstandings and everything pieces together with Colleen Hoover classic plot twists. The book beautifully portrays the themes of love, loss, betrayal, complex mother daughter relation, life falling apart and a love that always comes back.

The movie follows the plot of the book. Morgan Grant who gave up on her dream when she became a teen mom. And fast forward to 17 years we see her and daughter Clara battling their strained relationship. Which is tense and full of misunderstandings. 

Which gets worse when the only person who holds everything together between them, Chris Grant, Morgan’s husband and Clara’s dad, loses his life in a mysterious and tragic car accident. As they are left with dealing with grief they uncover shocking secrets. The regretting you movie also explores the main themes of the book, highlighting mother daughters’ broken bond, grief, betrayal, heartbreak, relearning love and trust with Colleen Hoover signature romance and mind bowling plot twists.

My Review on Regretting You Movie

The Jelly rancher scene – One of the smallest things I liked in the book was M saving the orange jolly rancher for Morgan. I don’t know exactly how to explain this but it was cute, thoughtful and was a big part of the book’s aesthetic which I loved. And I think the makers did a really good job using that in the book but not exactly how it was described in the book. But it was cute and good either way.

The cast is so perfect – Ever since the cast were announced I knew this movie was going to be good even at least for the cast. And from seeing the trailer to the movie this thought did not leave my mind and I kept thinking how they got this cast. To be honest I would say the cast was way too perfect. Like a lot different than my imagination. Colleen Hoover’s book has this thing where the characters are very complex and flawed in their own way.

The complexity was in the movie but the characters are so good looking and not flawed no matter how perfect their acting was it felt like something was missing. But overall the cast was perfect. Each and everyone did a great job portraying their characters.

Clara’s car scene and role model song- this was literally one of the first scenes I truly enjoyed and to finally see it in this movie and that too with a Role model song? It was perfect and so fitting. Clara seems like someone who would vibe to one direction but since she’s genz we can definitely count on Role model.

Morgan finding Chris and Jenny and venturing out was so satisfying to watch – when every piece was finally piecing together and Morgan’s reaction to it, breaking down things, smashing the car, the paintings in the house it was so perfect. Honestly after all the details of Jenny and Chris, the betrayal was so frustrating and painful.

Also, maybe a georie and rodrik type of movie? If you have been following the fandom trend from October- November 2025 you would know people, especially fans of early 2000s movies are shipping two fictional characters Georgie from Mean Girls and rodrik from the Wimpy Kid. And, it just hit me mckenna and bf resembles a lot like the two characters. So, to have a movie or series with that vibe would be perfect!!

If they weren’t alive Morgan should have done something to make them unalive all over again fir that. But she probably thought destroying Chris’ car and Jenny’s painting was the closest to that. And it was equally satisfying to watch this scene in the movie.
